Help us protect families from domestic and financial abuse.

Dear friend,

As we approach the end of the financial year, we thank you again for being part of our social justice community, caring for people who are in crisis and in desperate need of income support and free legal advice.

Last year we celebrated our 40th year as a Community Legal Centre, established to fight for the rights of New South Wales residents to access their social security entitlements.

This year, we've been fighting to stay afloat and keep providing our valuable services.

We challenge Centrelink when mistakes are made, and step in when perpetrators of domestic and financial abuse weaponise Centrelink and families are denied income, often becoming saddled with debilitating debts.

Right now Australia is experiencing a national crisis as domestic violence levels rise and victim survivors need our help.

Every week we are forced to turn away hundreds of callers due to our lack of capacity.

Callers like Raffat Fatima, who needed us to appeal her Centrelink debts brought about by her husband’s financial & emotional control and abuse.

Raffat had no access to her own money or knowledge of her husband’s finances or earnings – he controlled every dollar. She was entirely reliant on her husband to provide her with the information to report his income accurately to Centrelink, and when she escaped their home, with no work or money of her own, she was devastated to realise that she had incurred a huge debt to Centrelink.

We took Raffat’s case to Centrelink. Over a period of months, sourcing documents, scheduling interviews and writing appeals we were able to have the debt waived due to special circumstances. All of our services were provided free of charge.

Help us to help other women like Raffat, forced into debt through domestic and family violence.
